Overview
New Zealand Rural Contractor and Large Scale Farmer magazine is a free publication distributed to all agricultural contractors as well as the largest farming operations around the country. It targets a multi-million dollar sector of the agricultural market that is not reached or catered for by any other agricultural publication. (Over 30% of all rural contractors live in rural townships and therefore do not receive the free rural newspapers distributed on rural delivery.)
Its high quality layout makes it stand out from other farming publications and its glossy format enhances its retention value. This combined with editorial that is detailed and targeted directly at its readership boosts the magazine's appeal for advertisers.
New Zealand farmers are well served by the rural media, but most publications are pitched at the 'typical' farmer. Issues of interest to contractors and larger scale farmers have been largely ignored. The aim of New Zealand Rural Contractor and Large Scale Farmer magazine is to correct this imbalance - and also to provide a medium for advertisers wanting to specifically target the major buyers of big ticket machinery items.
With this in mind, the magazine has a strong emphasis on high-capacity farm machinery. New product technology is covered in depth, providing accurate technical information and bringing readers up to date with what's available on the market.
Industry news is also important. The magazine is endorsed by the Rural and Associated Contractors Federation of New Zealand, which provides news and opinions on industry issues. Topics frequently covered include health and safety, the Resource Management Act and other legislation, industry training and employment contracts - all issues that impact on contractors and farmers.
Each issue also includes a contractor profile story. These in-depth pieces explore everything from the subject's labour and practice management to their often colourful opinions on topical issues and future trends. The profile stories are one of the most popular segments of the magazine.
